MENTAL MAPS

This project is about Mental Maps: sketched cognitive maps based on memory, experience and perception of the individual.

I wanted to compare the various clues for orientation and the different perception of people within the same environment.

I was asking several people to draw five maps only according to their memory: An outline of the world, a map of Germany, a map of Berlin, one of the home and its surroundings of the person, and one “my city” map.

Printed on transparent paper, the maps can be compared with each other. Landmarks that are repeatedly depicted like the “boot shape” of Italy, or the TV tower of Berlin, are displayed in the last chapter. A book and a map of all the sketches put together were the result of that project.
